session
Twenty years after its
release, Bandwagon's charity recording 'Three Side of Hunger'
continues to sell and generate profits for agencies that
aid the poor. Producer Al Gomes recently presented a check
to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank for $3500 from the
sales of the recently released 'Anniversary Edition' CD
of the recording.
Inspired by Bob Geldof's 'Live
Aid' concert and Band Aid recording, producer and songwriter
Al Gomes wanted to put together a similar effort to aid
those less fortunate in New England. Gomes founded Bandwagon
in 1986, along with Jamie Kurtis, and produced the benefit
recording 'Three Sides of Hunger,' and two sold-out televised
concerts.
Bandwagon's goal was to elevate
awareness of the plight of the poor in New England and raise
thousands of dollars for those New England agencies that
aid the hungry and homeless.
Al Gomes and Bandwagon went
on to win the coveted Jefferson Award from The
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Foundation for Recognition of
Outstanding Public Service. View YouTube clip
'Three Sides of Hunger' features
three songs co-written by Gomes and performed by the most
popular recording artists in the New England area including
multi-platinum artist John Cafferty and legendary
singer/songwriter Mark Cutler on the song 'Where
Home Is' (which also features guitar great Thom Enright),
Jim Beaupre of The Probers performing 'Surrender
to Serenity' (along with Dan Moretti on sax),
and 'A Piece of Our Hearts' which features soloists
including legendary singer-songwriter Cheryl Wheeler
and Belly and L7's Gail Greenwood plus a 150-person
celebrity choir consisting of musicians, journalists (including
MTV Networks executive producer Bill Flanagan), TV
broadcasters, politicians, and service agency heads. All
three songs received massive airplay.
'Three Sides of Hunger' was
produced by multi-platinum producers Phil Greene
and Tom Soares, who've produced New Kids On the Block,
John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band, and Joey McIntyre,
and mastered by Grammy Award winner Ted Jensen, whose
work includes Norah Jones, Billy Joel, and the Rolling Stones.
In addition to raising money,
during its initial release, Bandwagon donated hundreds of
copies of 'Three Sides of Hunger' and time in public relation
and publicity services to various agencies throughout the
state to raise further money and to help guarantee the success
of the agencies' own fundraisers and capital campaigns.
The Anniversary Edition CD also
features the long out-of-print second Bandwagon release,
the Rash of Stabbings EP 'A Christmas Song,' which
featured the title track and 'Mr. Avery.'
